What’s in My Camera Bag

July 26, 2016

The gear I take in my bag varies somewhat on what I am planning to go out and photograph (if I happen to know this beforehand) but in general my camera bag contains the following gear…

On any given day, I can be shooting an awards presentation, wedding, Sports Tournment, or Team photos. It's a huge privilege to be able to photograph these events for our clients.

The key words for shooting for me is flexibility and adaptable. I try to stay light and lean, and usually roll out to jobs with two bags: A Lowepro Pro Runner 350 AW Backpack as my primary for cameras, and a Lowepro Pro Roller x200 AW for my laptop, Flash equipment and accessories. I'm very impressed with the Lowepro bags as it can withstand the rough treatment from a retired military member.

I usually carry two bodies: A Canon 5D Mk III with (battery grip) as primary, and a Canon 7D as backup with (battery grip). The battery grip allows me to shoot all day on 2 battery. I also carry the AA battery tray in case I need to shot longer. Through trial and error I've whittled down the lenses I carry to a Canon 50mm f/1.8, Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6, Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6, and a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8. The Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 has been a favorite of mine, and is great when shooting outdoors and I am not sure of what I will be shooting. When shooting indoors like our local rink the go to lens is the Canon 70-200 F/2.8. This provide me with the ablilty to work with less light when shooting action shots. To provide some light, I occasionally use a Canon Speedlite 600ex rt. I have 4 speedlites that we carry with us for low light areas. To go along with my cameras, I prefer using a rugged waterproof camera card case that can hold both CF and SD cards. I am a big fan of the Blackrapid RS camera strap because it lets me not worry about the camera if I need to move out of the way of a line drive.
